19.9 – 10.1 2021

In Autumn 2020, we present the exhibition I am the Single Work Artist with works by Hassan Sharif (1951–2016), who lived and worked in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Hassan Sharif was a pioneer in experimental contemporary art in the Middle East and is today regarded as a predecessor by a whole generation of younger Arabic-speaking artists. Sharif moved freely between his roles of artist, teacher, critic and writer. During a large part of his artistic career, Sharif was working with non-commercial art in public spaces. By doing so, he made contemporary art accessible to a wide public, in protest against an elitist art world.

The presentation at Malmö Konsthall emphasizes drawing, sculpture, installation and documented performance. We also show the critical satires, previously rarely exhibited, that Sharif published in newspapers. The exhibition is a collaboration between Kunst-Werke, Berlin, and Malmö Konsthall and curated in dialogue between Mats Stjernstedt (Malmö Konsthall), Hoor Al-Qasimi (Sharjah Art Foundation) and Krist Gruijthuijsen (Kunst-Werke).
